How Safe is Your Business?

Over the past few months we have been working very closely with the Business Crime Reduction Centre (BCRC) to look at ways in which AIDC technologies can help in preventing business crime. For those of you who are not familiar with BCRC, it is an initiative which helps SMEs in the Region tackle problems caused by crime by offering free and impartial IT and site security advice. It is jointly funded by Yorkshire Forward and Objective 1 and is part of People United Against Crime working in partnership with South Yorkshire Police.

To help raise awareness of how crime can be prevented in these areas and the support available to SMEs in our Region, we are running a joint event on 24 February 2009 at our offices in Chapletown, Sheffield. Events run by the BCRC and AIDC UK have been extremely successful in attracting SMEs and places for this FREE workshop will be limited to 40 attendees. We are hoping for a full house with a view to running future events throughout the year.

The seminar is FREE to all sizes of businesses in our region.

WEEE project continues to grow

Learning Light and Sheffield business Active Recycling lead the way with

e-learning that supports the skills, knowledge and competency of workers engaged in the disassembly of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.

e-Learning that is accredited by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management and supports the learning and development of operatives working to achieve NVQ Level 1 and Level 2 Recycling Operations (WEEE), has been piloted in the disassembly workshops at HMP Wealstun and HMP Everthorpe.

The e-learning has proved to be the catalyst for learners to achieving understanding of the environmental issues created by irresponsible disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment and the pressing need to bring understanding into the workplace of the principles of the WEEE Directive that requires the reuse, recovery and recycling of WEEE.

To underpin the valuable WEEE disassembly work being done in the prison workshops and in many social enterprise and commercial workplaces Learning Light with the awarding body WAMITAB (Waste Management Advisory Training Board) are working to create an additional pathway in the Recycling Operations NVQ Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications in the context of WEEE activities, using existing national operational standard units endorsed by the Energy and Utility Sector Skills Council.

Employers in the Waste Management and Environmental industry have welcomed this development that recognises the work of operatives engaged in WEEE activities and also the introduction of e-learning modules that provide a unique approach to learning in this industry.

Many of the offenders working in the disassembly workshops at the prisons have experienced e-learning as a new way of learning new skills for the first time. The positive feedback from them has indicated that this way of learning is an excellent way of reaching out to learners, whose past experience of learning has not always been good.

And the opportunity of working towards a recognised NVQ qualification is proving a major opportunity for them to look forward to securing employment in the waste management and environmental industries on release.

If you want to know more about this project and how e-learning can support employee development in your company please contact Gillian Broadhead,

Head of Networking Development, Learning Light Limited 0114 201 8925.

Learning Light lead the way with elearning for the recycling industry

Disassembly of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

‘Using Sustainable Energy Efficient Materials Recovery Techniques'

Learning Light and Active Recycling based in Sheffield are leading the way by introducing a work-based learning and skills programme that is being piloted at HMP Wealstun.

An innovative and creative approach to applying the principles of the WEEE directive of reuse, recovery, recycling and sound disposal of WEEE is being realised by the collaboration of SME's involved in the environmental, learning and recruitment industries.

Active Recycling are working with social enterprise and commercial organisations to establish a supply chain of WEEE products to be disassembled using sustainable energy efficient materials recovery techniques.

Learning Light have applied their expertise to this project by developing a blended learning programme that utilises the flexibility of elearning and gives the participants work-based skills, accredited by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management. The certificated course provides a unique industry recognised skills opportunity for everyone who registers to take the course.

The products are delivered to HMP Wealstun where prisoners are trained to disassemble the products and understand the benefits this work brings to the environment. The learning techniques piloted at HMP Wealstun have proven to be the catalyst in establishing a new accredited learning programme giving opportunity for prisoners to enter the environment industries on release.

Employment Company, Alan Associates have been so impressed with the programme that they now offer a guaranteed interview scheme for prisoners skilled in disassembly work with the view to securing them employment in the environment industries.

For more information contact:

Gill Broadhead email: gillian.broadhead@learninglight.comTelephone:

0114 201 5703 <a target='_new' href='http://www.learninglight.com/'>http://www.learninglight.com/

Recycling your WEEE products contact

Peter Murphy Active Recycling 0845 257 8604

Employment Opportunities in the Recycling Industry

James Broadhead Alan Associates 01909 774814

A commitment to quality and effective e-learning at Yorkshire based Interactive Solutions has helped their client St George's, University of London scoop a second award for their flagship e-learning package - “A Taste of Medicine”.

The award was presented at the prestigious E-learning Age awards in London's West End, attended by representatives from the UK's leading e-learning agencies, their clients and industry experts.

Beginning life as a CD-ROM, the materials have now been redeveloped for use on the web, modified and upgraded to reflect St George's evolving requirements. New content has also been developed to create a family of products which it is hoped will help students get the most from their work experience; prepare for medical interviews; and introduce them to teaching & learning techniques in Higher Education.

The judges commented that the site “provides transparent and appropriate information, advice and guidance, in a format that is appealing and accessible to its target audience. The judges liked the demonstration of shifts in learner attitudes and data linked to the original goals. Anecdotal evidence from stakeholders was particularly powerful”

Based at The Media Centre, Huddersfield, Interactive Solutions have been working with St George's for over six years to develop e-learning content in support of their Widening Participation programme. Targeted at 13 to 14 year olds (pre-GCSE), the content aims to dispel misconceptions about requirements for entry into the healthcare professions and raise awareness of the scope and scale of career opportunities.

“It’s fantastic that the site has been given the recognition it deserves. Lots of work has gone into it, both from St George’s and Interactive Solutions, and our success is testament to the quality of relationship we have with the design team. I’ve been working with Interactive Solutions for over ten years, initially on behalf of the University of Bristol, and latterly with St George’s, and I’m delighted that I’ve been able to maintain the strong working relationship” says Kenton Lewis, Head of Widening Participation and Student Recruitment at St George's, University of London.

A Taste of Medicine is free to access and can be found at http://www.tasteofmedicine.com

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Editors notes

Interactive Solutions is an established e-learning and web development agency with a portfolio of clients that includes several UK Universities, education authorities, career services and regional development agencies.

For more information contact Managing Director, Dr Dayn Wilkins.
UK e-learning Report 2009

Learning Light supported by Creativesheffield has publish the UK e-learning Report 2009.

This report is designed to offer an overview of what we believe is the present

state of the UK’s e-learning and learning technologies industry.

We begin by offering a brief model of what we believe is the present working

definition of what is meant by e-learning and learning technologies, and we

are indebted to Michael Allen for his definition and illustrations.

It is from this that we put forward our proposition that the UK e-learning and

learning technology industry is indeed flowering!

The principal finding is that the UK e-learning industry remains robustly

positive in its view of the market and the prospect for continuing growth. The

interviews with leading companies in the industry also sought to understand

the dynamics of the industry as it saw itself, its ability to change and adapt

to new technologies and business modelsand its views of the likely structure

of the industry in years to come.

The report is available for download here see related documents or from the creativesheffield website http://www.creativesheffield.co.uk in the Digital New Media section reached from the Invest Sheffield page.
